M2 PRESSWIRE-15 June 1998-NEC: NEC to launch ADSL system to the international market (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

--World's first integrated ADSL access system supporting communication & broadcasting services

NEC Corporation (NEC) announced that it has launched an advanced multi-service delivery platform providing interactive broadband services to customers over Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). The system was developed by NEC and NEC Australia Pty. Ltd.. NEC group of companies will market the system, primarily targeting Asia, Latin America and Europe.

ADSL is a revolutionary technology that allows existing copper telecommunications networks to be quickly and cheaply utilized for high-speed internet access, high-quality multimedia, video and business data transfer.

The new product is the world's first ADSL access system supporting both communication and broadcasting services. The system integrates narrowband & broadband service delivery on a single access platform. It offers multiple service delivery capabilities such as broadcast services (Digital TV/NVOD),VOD, Internet/intranet services, business data services and telephony. Its evolving architecture features ADSL/RADSL to FTTx-VDSL with STM/ATM end-to-end solution. A modular architecture realizes expandability and scalability which allows easy addition of new users without service interruption. The system includes NMS/SMS, a fully managed system which supports local and remote monitoring, service provisioning and debugging for the switch, xDSL system and Customer Premises Equipment.

NEC and NEC Australia have already supplied trial systems to customers in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and Asia. One of the most successful trials has been with Telstra which has been a world leader in the evaluation of ADSL. Telstra is now deploying ADSL technology for the delivery of a range of services within their organization and provision of services to the homes. Previous trials have confirmed ADSL's suitability for delivery of video services such as Pay TV and Video on Demand.

The most recent announcement has been the commercial launch of Hongkong Telecom's "iTV Service" which is the world largest deployment of the most advanced local access systems employing new technologies such as ATM, ADSL, VDSL, ATM25 in network configurations of Fiber To The Curb (FTTC) and Fiber To The Building (FTTB) architecture.

With this experience behind it, NEC is to introduce the new system to the international interactive multimedia service markets such as broadband TV (Digital TV, NVOD, PPV), VOD, home shopping, game and entertainment systems, high speed internet services, TV conferencing services, corporate and SOHO network services such as remote LAN and business data services. NEC expects the new ADSL system will generate more than US$500M sales over the next 5 years worldwide.
