If the AMD/Cyrix crowd is hoping for INTC's margins to crash they're suicidal.

In such a situation, INTC will be dropping prices to at or below those of AMD and Cyrix. As those companies aren't profitable now, it is doubtful that they could survive with lower prices or volumes.

The whole idea, however, is ludicrous.

While Cyrix/AMD may gain a temporary advantage over INTC in performance, INTC is the technology leader. They set the ground rule which the others must play by.

Cyrix/AMD have no shot at beating INTC at the x86 game. INTC's real vulnerability, which the company appears to recognize, is to a competing paradigm. Cyrix/AMD are not obviously pursuing such a strategy (and, given their paranoia, INTC would have to really fall down to succumb to such a threat).
