Qwest Delivers World's First OC-192
Four-Fiber Network Ring

ÿÿÿÿBusiness Editors

ÿÿÿÿDENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1998--Qwest today announced the
activation of the world's first OC-192 four-fiber SONET (Synchronous Optical Network)
ring on its nationwide Macro Capacity(SM) Fiber Network.
ÿÿÿÿThe activation of the 63-mile route from San Jose to Oakland to San Francisco creates
an alternate path for traffic between any two locations, ensuring 100 percent service
survivability in the event of a fiber cut.
ÿÿÿÿ"The activation of the first SONET ring configuration on the Qwest Macro Capacity
Fiber Network is a significant industry milestone, designating Qwest the first to deliver to
customers the most reliable multimedia, data and voice services available today," said
Joseph P. Nacchio, president and CEO of Qwest. "Qwest is rapidly moving towards
completion of its second SONET ring - from Denver to Kansas City to Houston to El Paso -
extending our unprecedented service reliability to a greater portion of the U.S."
ÿÿÿÿThe Qwest Macro Capacity Fiber Network
ÿÿÿÿQwest's planned domestic 18,449 mile network will serve over 130 cities, which
represent approximately 80 percent of the data and voice traffic originating in the United
States, upon its scheduled completion in the second quarter of 1999. To date, over 8,550
miles of the Qwest Macro Capacity Fiber Network are activated, including the
transcontinental segment that extends from Los Angeles to Sacramento and across to New
York. Qwest is also extending its network 1,400 miles into Mexico with completion slated
for late 1998 and has transatlantic capacity to serve Europe.
ÿÿÿÿThe Qwest Macro Capacity Fiber network is designed with a highly reliable and secure
bi-directional, line switching OC-192 SONET ring architecture. Upon completion, the
network will offer a self-healing system that provides the ultimate security and reliability by
allowing instantaneous rerouting in the event of a fiber cut.
