In response to the statement about third party sound cards possibly being better than the "real thing", i.e. Creative Labs hardware, I have yet to see one. The clone cards that are 16 bit are never 16 bit in soundblaster mode, they always drop to 8 bit stereo (i.e., soundblaster pro) or 8 bit mono (standard soundblaster). Even the good cards like the ProAudio Spectrum and the Gravis Ultrasound still only have a 16 bit native mode, not Sound Blaster.

Of course, this doesn't mean the cards are inferior, its still a question of who had the standard first, and not necessarily better hardware. It is kinda curious though that no one truly has a Soundblaster 16 clone. I wonder why that is? Did Creative Labs make it uncopyable, either by strange circuitry or copyright protection?
