Ericsson and Telia to Co-Operate On WCDMA in Sweden
STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1998--Ericsson and Telia will co- operate on a new WCDMA experimental system in Stockholm, Sweden. The system will be jointly used to demonstrate and evaluate third-generation wireless services, like wireless Internet and multimedia.
WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is the radio technology recently chosen as the basis for a standard for next generation wireless systems in Europe. WCDMA is also being standardized in Japan, where commercial third-generation services are expected as early as the year 2001.
Ericsson will set up the new WCDMA system in early autumn. Telia, the largest network operator in Sweden, will take an active part in testing the system, which will initially be used by Telia and Ericsson.
The WCDMA system will also be connected to Telia's GSM network to demonstrate the possibilities of integrating current and upcoming technologies.
''Another purpose is to use the experimental system to optimize performance measurements in WCDMA,'' says Lorentz Engstrvm, Head of Strategic Business Development at Telia Mobile.
Ericsson has been a WCDMA pioneer since the mid-1980s and is now at the forefront of this radio technology. WCDMA is from the very beginning optimized for advanced wireless services, e.g. wireless datacom services, wireless Internet and other next generation wireless services, in relation to basic second-generation systems that were optimized for voice services.
Earlier this year Ericsson supplied a WCDMA experimental system to the Japanese network operator NTT DoCoMo. Later on in 1998 another experimental system will be supplied to Japan Telecom. Moreover, Ericsson will also supply a WCDMA system to Germany, to be jointly evaluated with the operators Mannesmann Mobilfunk and DeTe Mobil.
Telia is the leading supplier of telecom-based information services in the Nordic/Baltic region. At the same time, ''seamless'' pan-European and global services are being realized through powerful alliances and partnerships in Europe and around the world. Annual turnover 1995 reached 46,444 MSEK and the number of employees amounted to approx. 32,500.
Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.
