There was a large article in current Russian journal Ogonek on the
profession of image-maker - new for Russia. This is an interview with
an image-maker. Lebed' had 1 group working for him, while his opponent
had 6. However, these 6 were not coordinated - that was a mistake.
As a result the large city voted for the opponent, but still
Lebed won. Besides, looks like big money was after Lebed
(Berezovsky wanted once again to demonstrate his power - he
won't support Lebed for president, I hope; that's why Lebed'
is claiming he won't run). He also covered
surprising "Yeltsin's win in 1996
elections. Anyway - this sort of calmed my fears on longer term
political situation. From that article, image-making seems crucial in
Russia right now - it's much easier to sell, since not many care
about politics now (disgusted), and you don't have to pay cash when
voting. Big bucks won't support a candidate whose
goal will be nationalization of private property. In other words,
big bucks are in control. -Vi
