The Avid/SoftImage deal actually should be pretty interesting, IMHO. Avid has had problems shipping and developing high end systems (I'm referring to toolset/capabilities). If Avid can provide seamless translation from Avid Media Composer sequences into Digital Studio, it could prove to make Digital Studio an extremely attractive product in post-production.

I actually find the Digital Studio toolset very strong, and the advancements they're making every six months is extremely impressive. The NT workstations still don't have the horsepower (I find the slow speed frustrating), IMO, but this could change as processor speeds increase.

It will be interesting to see if Avid mismanagement ends up killing SoftImage. Sumatra (their next generation 3D program) development will be interesting. I wonder how much control Avid will take over the company.

All this being said, DSLGF still makes the best high-end products, and the recent products shown at NAB are strong improvements. The company hasn't changed and they're still improving their product line. I hope they can make inroads into new markets.

Just my 2 cents.
