But on the other hand, simply needing to know the date does not imply a need to the year. For example, my thermostat at home has different heating on/off times and temperatures depending on the day of the week. But it has no knowledge of the year. Since day-of-week is a continuous function across months, years, and millenia, there is no problem. Now if that elevator also happened to know about bank holidays and such, it could conceivably need to know the year.
