Re: 3DUI; Mainstream;
I'm glad we agree that modeling authentication as a car is a bad example. However, you say: But there are more natural ways of interacting with a computer ... Some of them will involve 3D
Can you give me any -specific- examples of this? The reason I don't believe 3D will ever play a significant role in UI is the fact that neither I nor anyone I've ever discussed this with is able to envision just how 3D improves an interface. I work with 3D day in and day out as a CGI modeler and animator. I can see a few narrow places for 3D but nothing general-purpose.
--- Economics textbooks, Swiss army knives, Glocks, StarTacs ... these things are -not- examples that have produced noteworthy returns to investors.
--- You said: I think barely 100 million people have a computer of any type yet, at least in America
Matt, I suggest you go out and look at some data before making off-the-cuff -- and completely wrong -- statements like this.
DOMESTIC unit shipments of PCs in this decade are nearing 200 million. According to Morgan Stanley.
Worldwide unit shipments of PCs, excluding the US, are expected to be nearly 100 million THIS YEAR ALONE.
That's what I mean by mass market. <g>
