Peter: Your ref: <Photo from Calcutta > teleport.com That photo could be from anywhere from India. Flowers and garlands serve many purposes in India. In the evening, when the husband comes home, it is very common for him to buy a bunch of flowers (a string of jasmine buds for example) for his wife. This, she wears on her hair after an evening shower. Does it not sound romantic? Another common purpose for flowers is to take them to temple and offer them to Gods and Goddesses, along with coconuts. You may wonder why coconuts are being offered to the Lord. The common reason given is as follows. One's ego, indicating one's self importance, is compared to an intact coconut. When the devotee appears in the presence of the Lord, the devotee has to submerge, shatter or break his ego in order for the Lord to accept and bless the devotee. Symbolically, the devotee breaks the coconut to show the Lord that he left his ego outside. Does it make sense? The concept of I, Me, & Mine are submerged in the presence of the Lord. JPR
