Fujitsu plans to make Java chips
TOKYO (Reuters) - Fujitsu Ltd said Monday that it plans to mass-produce system LSI (large-scale integration) chips for operating systems based on the Java programming language from next year.

The chips are expected to be used in Internet-related multimedia equipment and next-generation home appliances. Java is a computer language designed to run on many different computers and devices.

The company plans to produce about two million LSI chips a year initially and to increase production to about 10 million units annually as early as in 2001, a company spokesman.

Fujitsu aims for annual sales of 10 billion yen in 2000 and 50 billion yen in 2003, he said.

In November last year, Fujitsu said it had obtained a license from Sun Microsystems Inc to use its picoJava microprocessor core technology.
