I don't know what material you are reading, but science is doing just the opposite. Its funny you would say that the Bible would someday, "...take its proper place on the shelf as a quaint, historical oddity." when in the past many have tried to make it such without much luck. Today, in this country, it is being bought and studied more than any other time in it's history. All around the world people are turning their lives over to Jesus even when they don't have a bible or only a few books from it. Hundreds and maybe even thousands are being persecuted and put to death for their faith. There must be something to this person called Jesus Christ, or maybe all these people are mad, or delusional. You cannot deny Jesus is an historical figure. You also cannot refute that the writings we have are historical and accurate. There are only two conclusions that one can come to regarding Jesus of Nazareth. 1.) His is who He says He is -- God in the flesh. 2.) He was a raving lunatic! All indications show that Jesus was of sound mind. Nobody who is stark raving mad, acts like, or has such an impact on human history as He.
And now a little tidbit about the nature of time that I promised you. Time is a physical property of our universe and is affected by mass, acceleration, and gravity. If you have two atomic clocks synchronized, and place one at sea level and another at thirty thousand feet, the one at altitude will be running slower. Not much mind you, but still measurably slower. Now take that second clock and place it at the event horizon of a black hole and you will see the thing spinning wildly. What's my point, setting a time reference for historical dating is next to impossible. Unlike you I believe that the entire physical universe was created in six literal days. However, those six days, if we were there to observe, may have been like a million years per day in relation to the universe today! I'm not a scientist by any stretch of the imagination, but its food for thought anyway.
