The idea looks like it will get a quick start. I give up on the Compaq. I replaced the failed Compaq harddisc (Quantum bigfoot) with an IBM deskstar. The problem is Compaq restoration software only works with their original hardware configuration. I finally got Win 95 installed but nothing works or does not work properly (modem, video card, sound card IDE controller , a very long list in the device manager.) I can not find any drivers on the compaq website.

I will initiate a new system with two computers in mind. I can salvage a couple of things from the Compaq, Pentium 200 mmx CPU, and maybe the floppy and IDE CD-ROM (would they require specialized drivers?) mouse and keyboard.

I will use the case and my new IBM harddisc from the following new computer to build a socket seven machine with the salvaged Compaq components.

Gigabyte 686BX (4 DIMM) $173.60 or
ASUS P2B (3 DIMM) $164.86
still debating

PII 233 boxed $182
128 MB Corsair 16x64 cas 2 RAM $316 (PC100)
Procase with 300 watt PS $120
TEAC floppy $ 24
MII video 4MB $120
IBM IDE deskstar 6.5 GB ($214) have
3 COM NIC have
Modem ? ISA, PCI or COM ______
$950

I will try and use the Compaq IDE CDROM or the Aptiva CDROM via network.

I intend on going all SCSI as mentioned before but this should get me back into my comfortable chair.

I want a dual channel SCSI adapter, either the new AHA 2940 or the AHA 3940. I need a little time the figure these out and select some nice SCSI harddrives and CDROM.

I will probably move tonight on some of the above. Anyone want a good deal on a nice Compaq case?

Regards

Zeuspaul
