Multimonitors - simultaneously updated

>> Short answer to a long question: Everything on every monitor you see updated simultaneously. <<

That is good news. Now I can understand why traders want a multimonitor trade station.

>> I'm still trying to evaluate card options. Matrox Mystique 200 or Matrox Productiva G-100. Any thoughts? <<

Matrox video adapters can only be used as the primary video adapter in a multimonitor system with Win 98. I base this statement on two observations. One, Matrox video adapters are not included in the list of video adapters that can be used as a secondary video adapter Dirk Hente posted in message 929. From comments posted in news groups others have had difficulty in using two Matrox video adapters in a multimonitor video system. On person ended up using a Matrox video adapter as the primary adapter and a low end S3 Virge video adapter as the secondary adapter.

I strongly advise against buying a video adapter for the AGP port which is not included in the list of adapters posted in message 929. Reason there is no way you can determine ahead of time which adapter will be the primary adapter and which will be the secondary adapter. If the BIOS determines a video adapter in a PCI slot other than the AGP slot is the primary adapter and the BIOS determines a non-supported video adapter in the AGP slot is a secondary adapter the adapter in the AGP slot is unusable. The following information from post 929 supports this assertion.

"2. Insert the card into your motherboard, and then
add your second card. The system BIOS will decide
which card is the primary card. One way to verify
which card is your primary card is to check which
card displays the Windows 98 Startup logo when you
turn on the computer. The card that displays the
Startup logo is the primary card, and the card
that appears to be inactive is the secondary card.
If this is not what you want, reverse the order of
the cards in the PCI slots.

3. Repeat this procedure for each additional card.
Unfortunately, with current system BIOSs, there is
no way to determine which adapter will be the second,
third, or fourth card until the card is actually
used."

Here is an interesting news group posting.

Hi all.
I currently runing a Matrox Mystique 220 as my primary video card. I have added a Matrox Millenium intended as a secondary video card. Device manager tells me -

"Your computer's display driver will not work with multiple monitor
support"

I'm using RC5. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this or is it a bad idea to use two video cards that are so similar?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

>Well here's what I found out -

I actually referred to Windows Help. There is a list of compatable secondary video cards. I'm using RC5 4.10.1998. As of this build no Matrox cards are listed as compatable for secondary video. Among the supported cards was the S3 Virge ; so I tried a Diamond 3D 2000
(with S3 Virge) and Voilla!
Other supported cards include-
Cirrus Logic 5436 and up.
Many ATI chipsets
Some Diamond
and I forget the rest.
I'm sure that drivers will be made available to include most every card in the near future.<
