Re: WebTV; killer apps; CPUs

Here's an interesting Dvorak piece discussing WebTV. Dvorak has said his share of smart things in the past so I pay attention.

zdnet.com
I mean, the PC revolution began almost 25 years ago, and if you haven't found any reason to own a computer by now, then why would this change over the next year? Maybe for the Internet?

Enter WebTV.

Dammit, now I'm going to have to go buy one of these WebTV doodads so I can make a judgement about it.

WebTV's a dead end for Microsoft.

I agree.

So where will growth come from? It won't be from overly complex programs such as Microsoft Outlook 98--a Herculean effort that nobody wants.

I partially agree. Not too many would actually pay money for this crap -- even for free it's not that popular. I installed it for a try ... then got rid of it after discovering it brings my system to a standstill.

Dvorak then goes on to make some comments about various killer and pseudo-killer apps that I don't agree with at all.

Nothing exciting is happening. Does anyone notice that Microsoft's dominance is not helping the situation?

This I do agree with. I think a lot of innovation has been stifled either through fear of competing against MS or MS having already co-opted it, as Dvorak points out.

I'm wondering to what real use I can put the 400-MHz machine I'm now toying with.

I'm wondering the same thing about the 350Mhz rig I just put together for myself. It's not noticeably faster than my AMD 233.

Upgrading is agony, and I've received a lot of letters from readers telling me it's more than they can bear, too. Moving programs from machine to machine is ridiculously difficult.

I agree strongly. This may be an unserved killer app waiting to happen. Any takers for first round funding? <g>

As an AUI/SR/VR hypester I have to point out that Dvorak is totally missing that boat. I'm off to buy ViaVoice 98 and see if my new speed machine does better with it than my old rig did with VV r1.

God bless,
PX
