If the gold is there, a fire assay will rarely show little or none but it might not show all. Experienced assayers know all of the steps and what to look for. The standard problems have more to do with the amount of silver and lead that might be in the original sample. I would suggest that you find a copy of Bugbee's book on fire assaying. He goes through step by step procedures for every combination of precious metals.
