Mark,

Metals don't really mask. Rarely, if there is an excess of Pt or Pd with respect to gold, the assay won't finish. As the metals melt and start to alloy, they freeze. By looking at the sample when it comes from the oven this condition is obvious to the assayer. The solution is to fire at a higher temperature and when one does this one will probably loose the silver since it will oxidize. Since there has always been speculation that Pt was present at FL, I assume that assayers have used higher temperatures when dealing with FL ore. I guess it all comes down to mineralogy. Can anyone explain what it is about Franklin Lake Ore or any other for that matter which will mask a fire assay for gold?
