[Qwest Delivers World's First OC-192 Four-Fiber Network Ring]

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1998--Qwest today announced the activation of the world's first OC-192 four-fiber SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) ring on its nationwide Macro Capacity(SM) Fiber Network.

The activation of the 63-mile route from San Jose to Oakland to San Francisco creates an alternate path for traffic between any two locations, ensuring 100 percent service survivability in the event of a fiber cut.

''The activation of the first SONET ring configuration on the Qwest Macro Capacity Fiber Network is a significant industry milestone, designating Qwest the first to deliver to customers the most reliable multimedia, data and voice services available today,'' said Joseph P. Nacchio, president and CEO of Qwest. ''Qwest is rapidly moving towards completion of its second SONET ring - from Denver to Kansas City to Houston to El Paso - extending our unprecedented service reliability to a greater portion of the U.S.''
