Most of the network and telecom equipment companies are working in one way or another on DSL. I think most of the early development was done by Amati which is now a subsidiary of Texas Instruments and GlobeSpan which was spun off from AT&T.

Companies that are doing basic technology development and chip sets for ADSL are ADI/AWRE Amati/MOT Amati/TXN PAIR ORCTF ALA and quite a few others that I forgot to mention or don't even know. ALA - the french telecom equipment giant Alcatel Alsthom is probably the most powerful competitor.

Different technologies with similar applications come from Paradyne and Northern Telecom. And then there are cable modems wireless broadband and future satellite systems.

From a investor stand point I find Aware pretty expensive and have just 100 shares left when I sold the majority of my shares on bad news quite some time ago. Westell is relatively cheap but perhaps deserves that low price. Orckit is the only one where I increased my position several weeks ago and the only one trading near its highs.
