Glenayre Announces Availability of Its AccessMate Advanced Messaging Device Through Multiple Carriers AccessMate in Volume Shipments to AirTouch, MCI, PageNet and SkyTel SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wireless Access Group of Glenayre Technologies Inc. announced today that its AccessMate advanced messaging device is now available to users through multiple carriers including AirTouch, MCI, PageNet and SkyTel. The AccessMate, announced in September of 1997, is an alphanumeric text pager that operates over all ReFLEX(TM) protocols. As the smallest advanced messaging device on the market, the AccessMate is about the size of today's state-of-the-art, one-way alphanumeric pager but provides unprecedented functionality including registration, guaranteed message delivery, over-the-air programming and two-way functionality through preprogrammed responses.
With registration, the AccessMate can register its exact geographic location on networks based on the ReFLEX protocols. This allows the carrier to transmit an alphanumeric text message more efficiently and economically than traditional one-way broadcast paging networks, where the exact pager location is unknown. The AccessMate also utilizes a simple OTAP (Over the Air Programming) capability that allows carriers to offer differentiated and custom end-user services, such as information services including stock, weather, sports and news.
The AccessMate is unique in that it is the first advanced messaging device that does not require the user to compromise on size, battery life or functionality. The pager is just 3.2'' x 2.2'' x 0.75'' and operates on one AA alkaline battery for over 30 days. The AccessMate is capable of providing guaranteed message delivery by acknowledging receipt of a message, on a per message basis. Even when the user is out of range, or when the pager is turned off, messages are stored and then forwarded to the pager when it's back on or within range.
Users can receive messages on the AccessMate via a standard dictated message, email or directly from a two-way pager. Plus, in addition to guaranteed message delivery, users have the ability to respond via preprogrammed messages to other ReFLEX pagers, or anyone with an Internet email address.
''Users of the AccessMate will be excited by the no-compromises solution that our newest ReFLEX pager provides, including its unmatched size and intuitive, one-handed operation for ease of use,'' said Gary Hermansen, vice president of sales and marketing for the Wireless Access Group of Glenayre Technologies, Inc. ''The adoption of this product by multiple carriers is further validation that we are offering an advanced messaging device that meets the needs of the market with regard to size, ease of use, functionality and quality.''
With the paging industry moving in the direction of broader deployment of ReFLEX networks, the flexibility of the AccessMate as a messaging platform and the product's multiple functionality options make the pager an optimum entry point for carriers expanding their networks to two-way.
