Leaders in CD-RW Technology Announce Alliance to Promote Adoption of DVD+RW Format
07:59 a.m. Jun 17, 1998 Eastern
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1998--Hewlett-Packard Company, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Philips Electronics N.V., Ricoh Company Ltd., Sony Corporation and Yamaha Corporation today announced the creation of the DVD+RW Compatibility Alliance (DCA) to facilitate the adoption of the DVD+RW format and to offer guidance to companies developing compatible products. The announcement was made here at PC Expo, being held through June 18.

The DVD+RW Compatibility Alliance facilitates three activities -- the DVD+RW Alliance, a Technical Seminar Program and the Developers Assistance Program. The alliance's focal point is the DVD+RW Alliance, a group dedicated to the exchange of DVD+RW information, issue awareness and management of requirements for DVD+RW extensions improvements. The DVD+RW Alliance hosts a comprehensive Web site at www.dvdrw.org/dca that provides information about CD and DVD specifications and an e-mail reflector. The DVD+RW Alliance also provides a Compatibility Program, which facilitates the testing of DVD+RW products. This program sets product-testing procedures, benchmarks and facilitates confidential round-robin testing.

Through the Technical Seminar Program, the alliance plans to facilitate a series of seminars to assist software developers and hardware manufacturers in creating or adapting their products to take advantage of DVD+RW capabilities. The first seminar, scheduled to be held in Tokyo on July 8, will focus on the needs of DVD-ROM and chip manufacturers. Subsequent seminars are planned for the United States and Europe and will focus on software developers and PC manufacturers.

The third program, the Developers Assistance Program, is available to assist in DVD product-development efforts. The package includes access to the official DVD+RW specifications, updates and information related to obtaining a license for the use of DVD+RW patents from Philips and Sony, specification assistance, reference materials and testing notes. There is a one-time cost of $5,000 (U.S.) for the Developers Assistance Program.

Future DVD+RW packages and products will feature a new logo that makes it easy for consumers to identify products that comply with the DVD+RW format. BACKGROUND

The DVD+RW specification is based on input from a wide range of sources, including end users, PC manufacturers, CD- and DVD-ROM drive manufacturers, media manufacturers and software developers. The DVD+RW specification is designed to offer large data-storage and distribution markets a smooth migration path from CD to DVD while preserving customers' existing CD- and DVD-ROM investments.
