NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 18, 1998--

Top tier direct-order company garners top awards in support and

home products

Gateway (NYSE: GTW), a global leader in the direct marketing of PCs, today announced that it has won three World Class Awards from PC World magazine. PC World has the largest circulation among technology trade publications. The awards named Gateway as Best in the categories of Hardware Support, Computer Mail Order Company and Home Desktop PC (G-Series).

"Gateway is honored to be recognized by a publication like PC World in these categories," said Ted Waitt, Gateway chairman and CEO. "What makes this recognition even more distinguishing is the breadth these awards cover, from our service and support to our products, as well as who the recognition comes from, both the editors and readers of PC World."

Celebrating its 16th year, the respected World Class Awards honor the top hardware, software, and Web products in the computer industry. To select the best of the best, PC World's editors, testers, and contributors examined the entire gamut of products that have appeared in the magazine over the past year. Hundreds of products in 60 categories were judged on performance, value, consistency, and innovation. The magazine also polled its readers to name the best companies for hardware and software support, and for buying computers via mail order or online.

"The World Class Awards are synonymous with the best products in the industry," stated Cathryn Baskin, editor-in-chief of PC World. "Throughout the year, we search out the standout players in hardware and software for our readers. The World Class Awards allow us to shine the spotlight on the outstanding products and companies that have consistently proven to be top performers in the marketplace."
