Michael,

I believe that Mr. Grove meant that he was competing for the eyes of the consumer literally. We all have a limited amount of time in the day. In order for PCs to become ubiquitous, there must be a compelling reason for everyone to have one (a killer app). This could be some combination of the Internet, video telephony, and digital television (the recent preliminary agreement on a standard is a step in the right direction).

Unless there is a strong reason for everyone to spend time with the PC, sales could stagnate.

INTC's strategy is to continue to increase the capabilities of the PC and to encourage the development of applications that are compelling (and processor dependent) to continue the sale/upgrade cycle.

The success of this strategy is key to the future of Intel.
