Gene - Re :"I don't see how the makers can be happy about all this. "

Why?

Intel will offer the Mendocino in the same package/form factor as the existing Celeron. Plug it in and ship - kind of simple.

Should that make them unhappy or give them cause for worry?

Secondly, Intel will be offering as an option next year the Mendocino in a 370 pin PGA package - which will lower costs.

As is standard with Intel, they will provide MotherBoard manufacturers with complete CAD tools for PC board layout, parts placement and routing/drilling tapes, guaranteeing fully functional, production ready boards first-time with Mendocino and 440EX chip sets.

Should that make them unhappy or give them cause for worry?

Can they get better service from an Intel competitor?

Are their CPU suppliers that are servicing these Mother Board accounts with better service, engineering and design support?
