Pravin, explanation of This guarantees that they won't be able to sell any Slot 1 Celerons during the phaseout.

Intel announced that they will make a new 300 MHz Celeron on a PGA package rather than a Slot package. This lowers manufacturing costs for both Intel and the boxmakers. If I were a box maker, I'd forget about using the more expensive version until the new one came out.

see zdnet.co.uk and news.com

Of course, as the second reference points out, developing yet another proprietary standard is typical for Intel.
