There was coverage on the news, and in the newspapers, a week or two ago about a scandal involving hamburger meat, more particularly than any one grocery store. It seems that there was an analysis of the meat which showed that it contained lamb, pork and chicken in addition to beef. Apparently, the practice by butchers is to throw all of the scraps they trim off meat all day into the grinder when they grind the hamburger meat, as an economy measure.

The primary problem with this is that some of these meats require higher cooking temperatures than the others, to destroy harmful bacteria. So it would be possible to become ill by undercooking what you thought was 100% beef, but is not. Also, some people have religious beliefs which do not permit eating port, for example. And you certainly could not call this generic ground meat kosher!!

On the newscast I heard, the announcer said that this was the practice of virtually every supermarket, INCLUDING WHOLE FOODS!! But that is the extent of my knowledge--sorry!!
