>>Based on statistical comparisons of reconstructed northern hemisphere temperatures, the best estimates indicate that natural changes in the brightness of the sun and volcanic emissions both played an important role in governing climate variations over the period studied.

However, over the past few decades, greenhouse gases produced by human activities appear to have had an increasing influence on temperatures. "The anomalous warmth of several recent years appears likely to be related to human influences on climate," said researcher Michael Mann from U. Mass.

Ridiculous. There is no foundation for that conclusion.

It just shows that any computer model can be programmed to come up with the desired results depending upon the "proper" input.

The very idea that they can tell the temperature 600 years ago is about the funniest thing I've read in a long long time.

>>working on a National Science Foundation-funded study

They got what they paid for.

>>"The balance of evidence now firmly supports an important human influence on the global climate system. This is a serious problem for people everywhere, and it needs to be addressed at all levels of government."

Ah, government. They want more power and are trying to scare the fools.

For example, melting ice caps could raise sea levels, threatening coastal regions with more frequent flooding. The planet as a whole might expect to see frequent extreme weather events, Mann said. "Heat waves and droughts could become more common, and more intense."

"Crisis" works where "war" used to. Whip the masses up and hope they cede their $$$ and their freedom.

>>The study bears out concerns voiced by scientists in recent years regarding global warming, researcher Raymond Bradley, also of U. Mass, said.

That statement bears out that Raymond wants more government $$$ and knows what to say to get it.

However, the climatologists expressed concern about the degrees of uncertainty surrounding increased or accelerated global warming.

"We have a sense of what might happen to the planet as a whole, but the fact is, we don't really know what the regional impacts might be," said Mann.

The disclaimer for bad science motivated by grant money with the implied message to government "give us more research $$$ or we'll decide that global warming is no threat". Take away the government money and you take away the government solutions.

The fact is that 90+ Senators from both parties voted to tell Gore that the Kyoto Treaty is dead and they won't allow Clinton to impose on the US public by executive fiat.
