My grandfather immigrated from Italy and worked in the sweatshops of New York City for $.10/hr. He suffered greatly, but that was 10 times what he was getting in Italy and the work was easier here. I used to ask him all kinds of questions about the '30s. He confirmed much of what I eventually came to understand about those times. It's a picture somewhat different from that portrayed in the media of the times, in the textbook, and in the lore. I learned a great lesson about history and since then have gotten a kick out of reading history textbooks about eras in which I lived and thoroughly studied. The popular conceptions about what is going on are so distorted it is a miracle that the populace hasn't destroyed itself from wrong avenues tried. It is a testament to the nature of democracy that it finds the better course though it takes everyone on a roller coaster ride. It is this truth that scares most foreign nations away from its direct implementation. Even here we try to bend the will of the people because we fear the good consequence. Example: Rubin's resistance to tax code overhaul.
