Jim--

I agree with you--wish I didn't.

After this morning's early mild enthusiasm it was all downhill. A brief (and incomplete) roundup of analysts' comments and new reports:

Alex. Brown -- maintains "neutral" rating

Morgan Stanley (in their "morning notes"): "neutral"

NY Equity Research: "market perform"

Brown Brothers Harriman: "short term buy", price target 13 (this is our best press for today)

Dean Witter: "accumulate"

Piper Jaffrey: "market perform"--which doesn't sound awful, but it's a really nasty report

Couldn't get the rest; the server went down. But the point is: we're not gonna get any upgrades right now. Everyone except Piper Jaffrey is (very) cautiously optimistic, but they have no intention of changing their ratings until and unless they see improvement in the next quarter's earnings, a new CEO, and better marketing. No one except PJ discusses the possibility of a takeover (which frankly I find odd, considering the rumors and the poison pill); PJ says they don't think anyone would really want to buy.

So--not really encouraging, is it? I for one am praying PJ's wrong, and that a buyout will be announced imminently.

Janice
