ATMI's Emosyn Unit Opens New IC Design Center; New Director, Engineering to Manage Integrated Circuit Development

DANBURY, CT and SAN JOSE, CA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 1998--ATMI, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATMI), today announced that its Emosyn venture has added David Sowards as Director, Engineering. Mr. Sowards' initial responsibility is setting up and managing Emosyn's new integrated circuit (IC) design center in San Jose, CA. Mr. Sowards will lead the worldwide Emosyn Design and Development effort and joins an already established management team in Europe and the US.

Nicholas Wood, Vice-President and General Manager of Emosyn, said, "This continued investment in developing a range of application-based IC's based on our core competency in non-volatile memory technology necessitates further expansion of the design team and the setting up of the San Jose office. David's design and management expertise enhances our novel approach to low voltage non-volatile memory."

Before joining Emosyn, David Sowards was Director of Design Engineering for Information Storage Devices. Mr. Sowards has held various management and non-volatile memory design engineering positions with Exar, Catalyst, Wafer Scale, Xicor, and Unisys. Emosyn is currently developing smart card IC's in alliance with SMH Swatch's EM Microelectronics.

Emosyn, an ATMI venture, is a fabless semiconductor company focussed on the development and application of non-volatile memory.

ATMI provides products and services for semiconductor device manufacture, including thin film materials and delivery systems marketed through ADCS, environmental equipment marketed through EcoSys, thin film deposition services marketed through Epitronics, and sub-atmospheric gas delivery systems marketed through NovaSource.

Statements which are not historical information are forward looking, and involve risks and uncertainties, including, but not limited to: changes in semiconductor industry growth or ATMI's markets; competition, problems, or delays developing and commercializing new products, and other factors discussed in ATMI's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
