Tech panelists leave lasting impressions
USA Today - June 18, 1998

Now it's time to gossip.

On Tuesday, seven top technology leaders sat around a conference table
in a USA TODAY office and talked for 1 hour, 40 minutes about the
near-term future. A colleague and I were moderators. Wednesday, the
newspaper printed what they said.

Today, you get the real poop on the question everyone has asked me
since: What were they really like?

Here's my score card, going around the table starting on my left:

Eric Benhamou, CEO of 3Com: Somebody please take Eric to Disney World
and put him on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. He was so serious. I didn't see
him crack a smile the whole time. Had a lot of interesting thoughts.
Kept his Palm Pilot, which 3Com makes, on the table in front of him
and made sure he mentioned it a number of times. Got into a couple of
scrapes with Michael Dell of Dell Computer, who sat across from him.
Benhamou sees computing moving toward networked gadgets - like, gee,
the Palm Pilot - and Dell has a fairly major interest in computing
staying on personal computers.
