Xy, if you didn't follow the example posted by Janice, try this:

If you are using Netscape 3.0, bring up a page containing bold or italics, go the the menu bar, click "view", click "document source", and look at the special characters surrounding the words in question.

When using them, try to put them far enough down in the post so they won't show up in the thread's header listing. And, don't waste your time trying all of the other html stuff - it gets edited out by SI.
