Rex,
I've just started back looking at battery management. All that I'm finding out convinces me that this market is growing at over 60% pa and seems to still offer very good margins for the IC producers.

Sorry for the delay, for me this is still a hobby whenever I get a consulting position it takes precedence.

Anyway, I've looked at all the data sheets for all the competitors products and believe that I basically understand the market requirements. I've got a few chips from different manufactures but have not put any of them under the microscope yet.

From the data sheets I like the look of the Dallas Semi and Exar chips the Microchip 1400 also looks interesting. I need to develop cost models based on die area and process before I can start to estimate product gross profit margins. I will also need to get some price quotes for volume production, which is always less than any list price that you can find.

It looks like it will be very difficult to directly compare one solution with its competitors due to the different way in which each manufacturer is breaking up the overall problem. So in order to compare prices I will need to look at battery charger / monitor system solutions.
e.g. DS is only doing the ID and Temp/time and EE functions
BQ is doing all the analog sensing but no control or EEPROM
XR does sensing and control and regulator

I guess this is a sure sign of a new market when the exact chip function varies so wildly between manufactures.

I'll post more information as and when I have it available.

P.S. The Darnell Group is offering a market analysis report on smart batteries. Sharon Lancaster(909)279-6684
