China Gets First cdmaOne Network

Infrastructure provided by Samsung!

By Jeremy Scott-Joynt

19-JUN-98

China's first cdmaOne cellular network has opened in Shanghai, posing the first competition to GSM in the Chinese digital market.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ The Shanghai Great Wall Network is starting out with a capacity of 68,000 lines, with 67 base stations. The infrastructure and equipment was supplied by the Korean company Samsung.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ As are many companies with that brand name, Shanghai Great Wall is substantially in the control of the People's Liberation Army - which has rights over the 800MHz frequencies needed for cdmaOne systems - although the Shanghai Post and Telecom Administration also has a hand.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Great Wall is looking to push out a cdmaOne system across the nation, with initial plans focused on Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Once complete, Great Wall's network will be looking to rival the GSM systems supported by China Telecom and China Unicom. Until two months ago the two carriers were sponsored by different ministries, and in the constant jockeying for position that characterizes Chinese politics CT had used its, and the Ministry of Posts and Telecoms', muscle to block Unicom wherever possible.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Now that both are under the aegis of the newly-formed Ministry of Information Industries, that seems likely to ease in favor of a more commercial form of competition. But Great Wall seems likely now to continue the competitive tension on a bureaucratic basis.
