[AT&T asks FCC to block Qwest, Ameritech pact]

WASHINGTON, June 18 (Reuters) - Long distance companies opposed to the marketing agreement between Qwest Communications International and Ameritech Corp. have asked the Federal Communications Commission to halt the deal immediately, AT&T Corp. said on Thursday.

AT&T and MCI Communications Corp filed a petition with the FCC late Wednesday asking for a temporary order halting the arrangement until the commission decides whether the deal violates the 1996 Telecommunications Act.

Last week, a federal court in Illinois asked the FCC to decide the matter but the court earlier had declined to halt the marketing venture.

By contrast, a federal court in Seattle did halt a similaragreement between Qwest and US West pending the FCC's determination of the legality of that arrangement.

Last month, Qwest announced deals with the two regional Bell companies to market to their customers Qwest long distance service. Qwest pays the companies a referral fee for each customer that signs up for the new service.

MCI and AT&T filed suit charging the deals violated the Telecom act, which prohibits the Bells from offering long distance service to customers in their regions until they open their local networks to competitors.

The Bell companies maintain they are permitted to market long distance service provided by unaffiliated companies.
