I think you maybe correct. In Oracle's core business, relational database software, a significant percentage of corporate data is still held in flat files or on paper. The estimates vary, but between 60% and 70% is still not in relational format. Couple this with plummeting disk storage costs and the growth prospects are good. Perhaps an analogy is appropriate; if the US could support 5 times the number of cars on the road than today, loading up on Ford or GM stock would be a good bet.

However, Oracle are vunerable at the low end with departmental servers running Windows NT. Their distribution model is not as good as that of Microsoft (who are pushing SQL Server very hard, and winning a lot of business that Oracle does not even know about). In their mainstream Unix market they have competition from Informix and IBM are certainly wannabes as well. Oracle's Applications business is dwarfed by SAP, and it is questionable if they can ever attain the critical mass to be successful. I would agree that their Consulting business is growing strongly and is profitable. Not a bad report card though.

Definitely a hold!
