Oracle's management has been so incompetent that they have allowed their core business (the corporate database) to be seriously threatened despite the enormous revenues they have enjoyed. Ellison has been talking about supporting objects for years and yet Oracle seems to be scrambling in supporting user created complex data types. NCA (and their cartridge mechanism) was just recently announced a few months ago. This is utterly unbelievable.

Another disastrous mistake has been their policy towards Netscape. Instead of getting into bed with them in a big way early on, they allowed Informix to cut a deal. Finally, Oracle wakes up and cuts a deal of their own but INFORMIX is still the preferred database for new installations. Oracle still thinks they can do it all on their own or they'll buy Netscape if they bomb. More stupid arrogance.

Corel is hardcore about transforming an EXISTING codebase (WordPerfect Office) into a set of Java applets. Oracle has no expertise in this area and will get slaughtered. Corel is even developing a NC of their own. Again, Oracle is all fluff and marketing--they are telling the world that NC's are the way to go but how much of their own money are they betting? Not much.

Oracle's immense arrogance is even starting to turn off their loyal customers. Its a royal pain to do business with Oracle and even Lane admitted that recently.

And finally, Larry is far too preoccupied with taking on Bill. Give it up Larry, taking on Microsoft is a pipedream and its even questionable whether you can hang on to your existing position as the premier high end database supplier given your latest mediocre performance.
