** Be Willing to Accept Losses One of the greatest downfalls of most investors is the inability to take a loss when it should be taken. Losses are part of investing. The key is to minimize their impact by setting stop-loss levels.

Eleven people, including a number of GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Canada employees, were killed early on Thursday when a plane crashed in flames at Montreal's Mirabel airport as the pilot attempted an emergency landing. "There were no survivors, given the flames and the force of the explosion," Raymond Monette, general manager of Mirabel Airport, told reporters at a news conference. Mississauga, Ontario-based GE Canada confirmed in a statement that some of its GE Hydro division employees were on board the aircraft. General Electric Company (GE)
GE Medical Systems, a unit of GENERAL ELECTRIC CO, said that it formed a marketing alliance with IMATRON INC to distribute a cardiac scanner, the Imatron C-150 Ultrafast CT scanner, throughout the United States and Canada. Imatron's scanner uses electron beam tomography to create "stop-action" images of the heart and measure calcium deposits in coronary arteries, assisting physicians in early detection of heart disease, the company said. Under the distribution agreement, resulting contracts will be written directly with Imatron, which will install and service units, while GE Medical provides financing options for customers purchasing the equipment, the company said. ASTRA AB and MERCK AND CO agreed to restructure their 50-50 joint venture, Astra Merck Inc, in a deal that industry sources say could ultimately be worth $10 billion to $15 billion for Merck and gives Astra management control of the venture. The companies said that Astra Merck's business will be combined with Astra's wholly owned subsidiary Astra USA Inc. in a new U.S. limited partnership, named Astra Pharmaceuticals LP, over which Astra will have management control as the general partner. Merck said the agreement is expected to close July 1. The deal gives Astra the right to buy out Merck's stake in 2008 for no less than $4.4 billion. (Reuters 08:50 AM ET 06/19/98)

Merck And Co. Inc. (MRK)
MERCK AND CO said the restructuring of its joint venture with ASTRA will be immediately accretive to earnings because Merck will share in the revenues, but not the costs, of Astra product sales in the U.S. At a briefing, Merck CFO Judy Lewent said the company will get a percentage of Astra's U.S. revenues based on the product and the level of sales. The exact percentage was not disclosed. Astra said the restructuring would dilute its earnings by nil to 5 percent in 1998 and 1999, and be accretive to earnings by more than 5 percent starting in 2000. MICROSOFT CORP chairman Bill Gates said he was optimistic about the continuing growth of the personal computer industry despite Asia's financial crisis. "In terms of the worldwide PC market, this was another year of strong growth, (with) units growing well over 15%, that's a very gratifying result when you have 90 million units a year being sold," Gates said in a news conference in Taipei. Gates said some Asian economies had been in a down cycle, but this would not affect world market growth for personal computers. Telecommunicaoes Brasileiras Sa (TBR)
Brazil was busy Friday preparing an appeal of a court ruling that annuls a shareholders meeting that broke up TELECOMMUNICAOES BRASILEIRAS SA in preparation for its July 29 sale. "We're putting the final touches on our arguments and are going to appeal to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ)," said a spokeswoman at Brazil's Attorney General's Office. Government officials expect to lodge their appeal of the ruling by the Regional Federal Court (TRF) in Sao Paulo later Friday or on Monday. The TRF decided late Thursday to resuscitate an old injunction, granted and then quashed before the meeting, that sought to prevent stockholders from gathering to split up Latin America's biggest telecom.
