Many thanks for your excellent explanation. I agree with your assessment of gold and its lack of suitability (eventually) as "real money". I suspect it will have some atavistic character in our lifetimes, however. My real question is what will constitute "money" as gold used to do and no longer can for the reasons you state? How can we trust the politicians in each of the major countries to print just the right amount, avoiding inflation and currency flight? When the chips are down, will they not behave in a selfish manner?

Will we eventually have a world currency, and if so, who will control its amount and distribution? Perhaps the ones with the most nuclear tipped ICBMs (shudder).

Maybe I should take a course in economics (in my spare time).
