Sorry Mark, but it is not my understanding of that reading that free and clear necessarily implies that they also purchased the mineral rights. It is quite a common practice for the mineral rights to be stripped from the land especially around Houston. Free and clear has the meaning to me that it was purchased outright, with no loan and no surface easements or restrictions.

Since I am not a lawyer, your reading of that may well be correct. If that is the case then thank you for helping to clear that up.
