Indiana governor seeks end to Viagra on Medicaid
Saturday June 20, 1:15 pm Eastern Time

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. June 20 (Reuters) - The governor of Indiana wants to end the use of tax-funded Medicaid dollars to pay for the anti-impotence drug Viagra, it was reported Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Frank O'Bannon's office told the Indianapolis Star/News Friday he did not believe paying for the drug that treats male impotence was a proper use of tax dollars.

O'Bannon's staff members were searching for ways to put an end to state Medicaid payments for Viagra, the paper said.

The governor's move followed reports that about $3,641 in Indiana Medicaid payments had been used for prescriptions for the drug, the paper said.

On Friday, Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation's leading health maintenance organizations, said that it would exclude coverage of the drug from its new benefits contracts.
