Toward that end, Microsoft has named Jeff Thiel as the product unit manager for its tax initiative, according to a company organization chart. Thiel, who will work in conjunction with Microsoft's Money, Investor and online-banking services groups, would not discuss the company's software and service plans for 1999. "I cannot comment on unannounced product," Thiel said. Sources indicated the program would be ready in early 1999 for the 1999 tax season.

What?

The No. 2 title, TaxCut, is not sold at some retailers, such as Office Depot and Best Buy, because of "exclusionary contracts" with Intuit, sources said. Analysts noted that Intuit is a fierce competitor in the retail channel.

"They are a very aggressive company at retail," said one software analyst who declined to be named. "In terms of competitiveness, [Microsoft] has met their match. Intuit gets credit for being a nice company and they're not."

As if MicroSoft is some flower child?

Microsoft is also creating an electronic bill payment and presentation capability for the next version of Money, allowing vendors to send bills to customers and have customers pay electronically. Analysts said an online tax service is a natural add-on to Microsoft's line.

Retailers agreed. "To go where they're not is good," said one retailer who requested anonymity. "Money is geared at consumers. With this, they can go to small businesses and consumers."

What the Sam Hell is Quicken Geared too?

Where are they going, that they are not? This article is about tax software, and Intuit has a 74% share. So where are they going? Into Bill Presentment & Payment, where they are not?

Brooks if it looks like a moron, talks like a moron and reports like a moron...It's a moron. And I agree as long as CheckFree lets this continue...it will cost us all money.
