MAMMOGRAM ALTERNATIVES

In April, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that a woman who has annual mammograms over a 10-year period has a nearly 50 percent chance of receiving a false-positive result. What's being done to improve the accuracy of detecting breast cancer? The answer may lie in alternatives to standard x-ray technology. A few ideas include:

***Thermal imaging. Heat emitted by blood flow through arteries that feed malignant tumors has a distinctive "thermal footprint" says David Packer, the president of Computerized Thermal Imaging in Portland, Ore. The company's cancer-detection system is being tested at hospitals in Los Angeles and in Washington.

***Lasers. Low-powered ones beam invisible light safely through human tissue. Imaging Diagnostics Systems in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is working on technology that measures the light absorbed and refracted by tissue inside the breast. Malignancies have an "optical signature" says Richard Grable, the company's chief executive. The company will start testing the device by midsummer.

***Magnetic resonance imaging. M.R.I. machines use magnetic fields and radio waves to create "slice" images of the body. Caprius, a company in Wilmington, Mass., has introduced a machine that makes M.R.I.'s of the breast. It should be in use a five hospitals by the end of summer.

All three companies listed are public:

Computerized Thermal Imaging - COII
Imaging Diagnostics Systems - IMDS
Caprius - CAPR

It is interesting to note that Caprius had a high of 83 3/4 in late 1993 and stands today at their low of 1 1/2. IMDS had a high of 4 1/4 in March of 1997 and is now at their low of .43 cents. COII had a high of 3 1/4 in May of 1995 with the low recently at .47 cents and it's now at 1.05.
