I've played and /or done sessions with Neil Jason, Will Lee, Mark Egan Fernando Saunders and some other of the better bassists in NYC...

I stand by my statement that if you have 2 brain cells you can play bass... A college degree IS required however if you want to play 18 notes where 1 would do....

Also reading has little to do with ability on any instrument... I have seen people who can sight read fly poop on a chart, but have the soul of an ice cube... and people who can't read a note, but know EXACTLY what is appropriate to play in a given situation... THAT can't be learned. The players you mentioned, when hired to do a jingle, are required to read and get it on the first take. When they are hired to play actual music, they are hired because of their minds and creative choices (and sometimes hairstyles)... NOT their schooling.... Record producers couldn t care less where they (or I) went to school....

Reading, study, creativity and ability are not that closely related in my view... this isn't accounting... it's art.

Bass players STILL have it made.... Drummers bang crap around...
But there is NOTHING like playing with a kickin rhythm section....

cheers
