Hello all,

Just wanted to float another update on DSL and U.S. West in Utah. A couple of new observations ...

1. The equipment being deployed in Utah appears to be the Cisco/NetSpeed hardware. Specifically the unit that is being installed is: netspeed.com

2. There are several locations that I know of that the installations are not going well. I have a couple of friends who have been told they will not get the service. Installations were running about a week behind ... the technicians showed up at the home to install and they were unable to get the DSL line up and working.

3. The techs claimed that they are understaffed, with only a couple of people who are really up on the technology and computers in the Salt Lake City area ... they explained that most are telco techs.

4. They indicated that line conditions are not the best with a multitude of problems. One tech explained that he was really worried about this summers heat ... indicating that lines that are working now will not be working in the summer heat!

5. The tech also indicated that there have been numerous "old coils and things" that are scattered around the telco network that are causing them to have to inspect the wire from the CO to the house.

So I have numerous friends that can't get DSL in the area because their developments are too *new* (they've been told that there is fiber *almost* to the house and that it is not cost effective to deploy DSL in these areas) and now several others that can't get it because ... well ... it just won't work for them.

I'm looking for someone who has a successful installation here in the area ... I'll update when I find one!
