Hi George, Your question is perceptive. Japan is very important to US markets and world markets. Their economic situation is quite bleak. Much has been discussed about their banking situation. Many of their banks are bankrupt but still in operation due to veils of secrecy that protect them. In aggregate the Japanese banks lost something like $60 billion in non-performing loans to Indonesian companies. And of course Japan has invested throughout Asia. There is a big cat and mouse game being played over there between Japan and China. Recently Japan has released restrictions on Japanese investments. Much of that money may come in time to other parts of the world, including the US Bond and Stock market. Probably a good bit of it leaked early into the US stock market in the first quarter this year. Many US financial companies are moving strongly into Japan to assist in the reinvesting of this huge capital surplus, since their policy change date of April 1st.

Some good places to get information on Japan are the following threads:

Subject 18599
Subject 12199
Subject 9925
Subject 5416

Not all of the information in these threads relates to Japan but quite a bit does. You might especially read Jess Beltz, who is a poster on the Semi-Equips - Buy when the Blood is running in the Streets! thread, as he has contact with someone who is directly connected into Japan. His posts have been very bearish lately, however, just to forewarn you.

Regards, Mike
