Texas Instruments Closes Singapore Plant, Fires 600 Workers

Singapore, June 20 (Bloomberg) -- Texas Instrument Inc., the
world's biggest maker of memory chips for mobile phones, said it
will close its a Singapore plant and fire 600 workers.

The U.S.-based company said operations of the plant, which
makes integrated circuits for disk drives, will be absorbed by an
existing factory in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

This comes as Texas Instruments sold its money-losing memory
chip business to Micron Technology Inc. two days ago to
restructure its business.

''The decision . . . recognizes the need for improved
operational efficiencies and cost competitiveness,'' said Dennis
Robbins, Texas Instruments' manufacturing operations manager.
