while I think your estimates, in the trillions, are too high, this $500 billion is too low.

If it is really just a measly $500B, I think the problem would be long gone. The last hint of some better numbers came from LTCB's announcement of trying to categorize the loans into uncollectable, difficult to collect and likely collectable (not the exact terms but you get the meaning). This is a prelude to a LTCB (Long Term Credit Bank) merger or takeover.

The Japanese are known to move slowly and cautiously with very long horizons in their analysis. Could LTCB be a test before they disembark on a more ambitious plan?

It is easy to allow the issue of Japan or Asia to distract us from the more important subject - my investments. Instead of trying to take blind stabs, I think the one thing coming out of Japan in the next couple of months would be more meaningful figures. If those are positive (a true <$500billion figure), I opine that the flu is over.
