Actually, the correction started last August, not in December. The smaller stocks led the rally into early October. But the correction would have occurred regardless of any news related factors anyone wants to retrofit. The market had gone up 2000 points from April to early August. Momentum and breadth had started deterioriating from late July. Retrofiting news events to explain market fluctuations is a sign of an investor who is blowing with the wind.
