Attention News Editors:

BRE-X AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT ONTARIO CLUB WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24

TORONTO, June 22 /CNW/ - Why did the Canadian media fumble the biggest
fraud story in Canadian history -- again and again?
Come out to the Ontario Club (located on the 5th floor of Commerce Court
South, 30 Wellington St. W. in downtown Toronto) on June 24 at 7:30 p.m. to
hear Brian Hutchinson speak about his new book, Fools' Gold: The Making of a
Global Market Fraud. The event is sponsored by the Toronto chapter of the
Canadian Association of Journalists and the Toronto Press Club.
Fools' Gold, published by Alfred A. Knopf Canada, examines how some of
Canada's most respected business writers helped fashion the myth that a
desperate penny stock company -- Bre-X Minerals Ltd. of Calgary -- had found
the richest treasure on earth. In what promises to be a controversial evening
of media culpa, Hutchinson will address how most reporters relied on
information that came from vested interests on Bay Street and never bothered
to examine Bre-X founder David Walsh's dubious record as a stock promoter.
Some sat on damning information, says Hutchinson, while completely ignoring
how one of Canada's most powerful mining companies had influenced a
notoriously corrupt foreign government in an attempt to seize control of the
fake gold deposit. Hutchinson will also speak about the recent political and
social unrest in Indonesia, where he spent two months researching his book.
Two lucky guests will win door prizes -- autographed copies of Fools'
Gold. The cost of admission is $3 for CAJ members and $5 for non-members.
There will be a complimentary snack table for guests and drinks will be sold
through the club's cash bar. The Ontario Club has asked that guests comply
with its dress code by not wearing jeans or running shoes.
Brian Hutchinson is a veteran journalist who has written for some of
Canada's top publications including Canadian Business, Saturday Night, the
Financial Post and Alberta Report.
The Canadian Association of Journalists is a non-profit organization
representing more than 1,500 print, radio, television and photojournalists, as
well as journalism school students across Canada. The Toronto chapter hosted
the organization's 20th anniversary conference this past April. The Toronto
Press Club was founded in 1882 and has 450 members. The Press Club founded the
National Newspaper Awards in 1948 and the Canadian News Hall of Fame in 1965.
